Narcolepsy can be regarded as sleep attack, in which the sufferer facing problem to maintain a conscious state. Drowsiness usually goes away after sleeping for 15 minutes, but within a short time sleepiness was attacked again. Conversely at night, many people with narcolepsy who complain can not sleep.Individuals are not able to withstand experience drowsiness and they will continue to fall asleep anywhere, regardless of what they’re doing.

Narcolepsy  can occur suddenly whether on the time to eat, speak, write, or stand. The disturbance occurs in sleep regulatory mechanisms.

Narcolepsy: Pathophysiology, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Sleep, according to brain waves, divided into stages ranging from stage 1, 2, 3, 4 and rapid eye movement (REM.) REM sleep is the stage where we dream. In people with narcolepsy REM waves as the waves breaking into consciousness. As a result sleepiness continued to attack, and brain as in a state of conscious dreaming.There are four main symptoms :-

  • Excessive sleepiness (EDS)
  • Cataplexy
  • Sleep paralysis
  • Hypnagogic / hypnopompic hallucination.

Cataplexy is a typical symptom of narcolepsy characterized by muscle abruptly. The muscles can relax just a few muscles so that the head fell off, mouth open, dropping the goods, or it could be a whole body muscle. This situation is triggered by a surge of emotions, both sadness and joy. Usually the more positive emotions than negative emotions trigger cataplexy. In a study, patients with narcolepsy are invited to watch comedy movies, and laughing when he suddenly he fell limp as though no bones that support the body.
Condition dreams that creep into consciousness manifests as hallucinations. People with narcolepsy usually hallucinate like to see other people in the room. Other people may be people who are known, friends, family, just shadows, ghosts or even aliens, depending on the cultural background of patients.This disease usually is more frequently referred to a neurologist.
With symptoms of this unusual, not infrequently family considers patients suffering from mental disorder narcolepsy.
