Ask Your GP For Recommendations

The best person to get in contact with when looking for a cosmetic surgeon, is your GP. Explain who you are looking for and why, and they should be able to give you a few recommendations. At this point you’ll also be able to discuss whether any health issues you have will affect your surgery.

Visit Clinics

You now need to get as much information as possible about the facial procedure you want, the clinics and hospitals that offer it, and the surgeons who carry out the operation. Go to different clinics and hospitals, and ask plenty of questions to get an idea of the clinic that’s right for you. They should be happy to discuss everything with you if they’re reputable. Write down questions you want to ask so you don’t miss out anything important. Here are some ideas:

  • How many times have you performed this procedure?
  • What other procedures do you perform?
  • Who will assist in the procedure and what are their qualifications and training?
  • What is involved in the procedure?
  • Can I have some references for patients who have had this procedure with you?
  • What are the fees for this procedure?
  • Are you insured for malpractice?
  • What level of sedation will you use?
  • How long will the procedure last?
  • How long will it take me to recover?
  • Where will the surgery take place?
  • Will there be scarring?
  • What realistic results should I expect?
  • What are the risks?
  • Do you do revisions? At what cost?

Ask questions as above and any others you have about the cost/experience of the surgeon/care after the operation.

You shouldn’t choose a clinic too far from where you live, as you’re unlikely to want to travel very far after you’ve had your operation. The person who speaks to you about the surgery should be a qualified doctor/nurse, so make sure they’re registered with the general medical council or the nursing and midwifery council. You should also check that the hospital or clinic you’ve chosen is registered with the Care Quality Commission. You should never have surgery at a place that can’t prove it’s with the CQC! You can also take a look on the CQC website at the latest inspection report to get an idea for the quality of their service.

Whatever surgery you choose, you should never feel under pressure to make a quick decision. You need to be able to answer 3 important questions before going ahead:

  • Do I fully understand what’s going to happen?
  • Do I have sensible expectations?
  • Do I understand what could go wrong, and could I cope?
