PETALING JAYA – All major entry points to Malaysia, including Kuala Lumpur International Airport, are under an Ebola virus alert as the World Health Organisation scrambles to contain the outbreak in West Africa.

Health Minister Datuk Seri  S. Subramaniam said the government is stepping up preparations to prevent the highly contagious disease from reaching Malaysia. However, there has been no directive yet to control the entry of those coming from West African countries.

Nationals from the affected countries in Africa require visas to enter Malaysia, so the country can stop issuing them if it is needed to control the spread of the deadly disease.

He said the Health Ministry had strengthened preparedness and response activities, particularly at entry points into the country such as at KL International Airport (KLIA).

The National Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre (CPRC) was monitoring and coordinating the preparedness and response activities in facing EVD, he said in a statement.

Dr Subramaniam also said that the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) had a laboratory that could detect the Ebola virus and government hospitals nationwide had facilities to treat patients.

He said the ministry was also cooperating closely with the education and foreign ministries and government agencies such as the immigration department for the screening of visitors. The Education Ministry had been advised to screen foreign students who had returned to EVD-infected African countries, he said.

Other countries in this part of the world that have started an Ebola watch include the Philippines, which said last Friday that people arriving from West African countries hit by the deadly outbreak would be monitored for a month.
