Do you know that there’s a program called nutrition month Malaysia ? Most of us don’t know about this programme. For your information, there’s an organization to organize this nutrition month malaysia for its 12th consecutive year.

This year, the Nutrition Month Malaysia 2014 theme is ‘ Eat Right, Move More: Fight Obesity”. The programme launched by Malaysian Health Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Subramaniam at the Mid Valley Exhibition Centre last week. This Nutrition Month Malaysia programmes strive to improve the nutritional status of Malaysian families in order to prevent non-communicable disease that are currently on the rise in Malaysia.

According to the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) the obesity rate in Malaysia has increased by almost three and a half times, from 4.4% in 1996 to 15.1% in 2011. It shows that the number of obese Malaysians at about 2.5 million people. Overweight rates have also increased from 16.6% in 1996 to 29.4% in 2011. It show the rate of overweight or obese is about one in two Malaysian adult.

Chairman of the Nutrition Month Malaysia 2014, Dr Tee E Siong highlited that the focus of this year’s programme will be to fight obesity at its roots. As the theme is ‘Eat Right, Move More: Fight Obesity’, he accentuated the need to promote greater awareness on the importance of healthy eating and active living in order to reduce the prevalence of obesity. The Nutrition Month Malaysia programme has been an annual intiative since 2002 and is the collaborative effort of three professional organization, the Nutrition Society of Malaysia, Malaysian Dietitians Association and Malaysian for the Study of Obesity.
