The Ice Bucket Challenge: From ALS to Mental Health Awareness

Remember the Ice Bucket Challenge? In the summer of 2014, videos of people dousing themselves with ice water went viral, raising over $115 million for the ALS Association and significantly increasing awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The challenge, which involved dumping a bucket of ice water over one’s head and then nominating others to do the same or donate to ALS research, was a global phenomenon. It led to considerable advancements in ALS research and patient care.

Now, in 2025, the Ice Bucket Challenge is back, but with a new focus: mental health. The University of South Carolina’s MIND (Mental Illness Needs Discussion) club launched the #SpeakYourMIND Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness and funds for mental health initiatives. Inspired by the original challenge, this revival encourages participants to pour ice water over themselves and nominate others, with donations benefiting Active Minds, a non-profit organization dedicated to mobilizing youth and young adults to transform mental health norms.

This new challenge has quickly gained traction on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, particularly among high school and college students. With a significant percentage of young people experiencing mental health issues, the #SpeakYourMIND challenge aims to break the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage open conversations. Participants are also sharing personal stories and resources, creating a supportive community and promoting the importance of mental well-being.

Just like its predecessor, the revived Ice Bucket Challenge is turning awareness into action, demonstrating the power of social media to drive positive change and address critical issues.
