The Keto Diet Explained (Infographic)

The Ketogenic (a.k.a. Keto) diet is an innovative approach that helps promote weight loss by depriving the body of carbohydrates for fuel so that it has to burn fat instead. This infographic from Lakeshore Convention Centre examines the science of this diet and asks whether or not it is a safe approach to weight loss.

What Exactly is the Ketogenic Diet?

Ketogenic diets aim to send the body into a state of ‘ketosis’ through a very strict low-carb diet. If you follow a keto regime, you will need to keep your carb intake low and your protein levels moderate. Instead, fats will form your principal calorie source.

What is Ketosis?

Our bodies typically produce energy through the burning of glucose from carbohydrate foods. Keto aims to eliminate carbs from the diet, thereby forcing the body to burn fat instead. The body then goes into a state of ketosis, as the energy derived from burned fat comes in the form of molecules called ketones.

What are the Benefits of the Keto Diet?

This diet has been proven to promote weight loss and some studies have found that it can lower the risk factors for diabetes, cancer, epilepsy and Alzheimer’s disease.

Is the Keto Diet Safe?

There has been much debate among the medical communities as to whether or not keto is a safe way to lose weight. Nutritionists warn that the long-term elimination of carbohydrates without a healthy substitute could put you at increased risk of certain nutrient deficiencies. What’s more, because keto encourages a high intake of high-fat foods, it could potentially raise the amount of cholesterol in your blood and put you at higher risk of heart disease.
