Fungal nail infections or known as onychomycosis is a type of infection caused by fungus and is more common in toenails than fingernails.
Depending on the severity of the infection, the nail structure could be damaged including the nail matrix, nail bed and the nail plate. Fungal nail infection normally starts from the edge of the nail.

Fungal Nail Infections

The infected nail usually becomes discoloured, brittle and odorous. In severe cases the nail may separate from the nail bed. Fungal nail infection is mainly caused by the three types of fungi, dermatophytes, yeasts and moulds.
Fungus thrives in warm and humid environments. It enters the skin through the horny or superficial layers and causes infections to the skin and nails.

Symptoms of fungal nail infections

  • Discolouration (yellow, dull)
  • Brittle, crumbly or thickened
  •  Emitting a foul odour
  •  In severe cases, the nail may separate from the nail bed.

The transmission may occur through contact with the floor, sharing of nail file or direct contact with the floor, sharing of nail file or direct contact with infected nail. Fungal nail infection requires immediate treatment once it is diagnosed.

Treatment of fungal nail infections

  •  Topical antigungal lacquer
  •  Oral medications under a doctor prescription.
