Guidelines for selecting and using face mask

Using face mask for health is important especially when there a disease such as pandemic influenza. This is guidelines for selecting and using face mask :-

 

Surgical Mask

– This type of mask use by :-
a) Patients suspect of having influenza
b) Healthcare workers/ people who care for patients
c) Those exposed to influenza patients
d) Those having signs and symptoms of respiratory illness

How to use surgical mask
– Complete cover the nose and mouth
– Depress metal clip
– Single use only, discard after use
– Dispose into rubbish bin

Respirator

– Use by health staff and others who are engaged in hazardous activities during critical situations
How to use
– It is depend on the type of mask. Need to follow instruction in the manual given by manufacturer.

 

Face mask –

-use by medical and health staff carrying out specific procedures which may expose them to spillages, spoilages or secretion of the influenza patients.
– staff at high risk area, such as Level 3 laboratory staff and those doing research on the virus.
– this mask is not effective if you have beard on your face, as it allow contaminated air into the mask.
How to use face mask
a. Stacken the rubber band by pulling it to prevent from being too tight.
b. Hold the mask on your palm and place the tip of your fingers on the metal clip. Allow the rubber band to dangle under your hand.
c. Cover your nose and mouth by placing the mask below the chin with the metal clip is placed on the ridge of your nose.
d. Place the rubber bands around the head; one above the level of the ears while the other is placed below the ears.
d. With both hands depress metal clip, follow the shape of your nose.
e. To ensure the mas is worn properly, place both your palms on the mask and blow strongly.
