Kids of obese mums die younger

The study from Paris show that children born from obese mums are 35 percent more likely to die prematurely in adulthood. Researchers at the Universities of Edinburgh and Aberdeen in the U.K found from 37,709 children of 28,540 women who gave birth between 1950 and 1976. The children were aged from 34 to 61 at the time.

The study has been published in the online journal bmj.com . The data including 6,551 children who had died prior to the start of the study. From the research, 21 percent were obese mums that their BMI ratio of 25 to 29.9 with a BMIof 30 or more when they give birth.

The team also found that the children of obese mums were 42 percent more at risk of being admitted to hospital for heart disease as adults.

Other result has shown that conditions in the womb can cause lifelong body changes which may affect such functions as appetite control and metabolism. Post-birth factors like diet and exercise or a genetic propensity to be obese could not be ruled out as the cause of the children’s health problems.

It means that there need strategies to optomise weight before pregnancy are urgently required, according to the team.

 

“As obesity among pregnant women is rising, along with levels of obesity in the general population, our findings are of major public health concern,” said the University of Edinburgh’s Rebecca Reynolds

According to the World Health Organisation, more than 1.4 billion adults aged 20 and older were overweight in 2008 – doubled the figure since 1980. At least 2.8 million adults die every year as a result of weight related health problem. – AFP
