No GST for patients of USM health campus

GEORGE TOWN: Universiti Sains Malaysia’s (USM) health campus in Kelantan has yet to impose the Goods and Services Tax (GST) that started nationwide today on its patients treated there.

Its vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Omar Osman said the USM health campus would continue using the old rates to charge patients.

Despite USM status as a teaching institution with its hospital campus, Omar clarified that the higher learning education centre had no plans to charge patients GST.

“The service charges for medical treatment are however subjected to terms and conditions of relevant authorities.

“For the time being, no change is expected to be made and we hope GST exemption will be granted in the near future to our medical campus on account of USM’s status as an education institution,” Omar said in a statement today.

He said USM had set up special information counters to answer queries about GST at its Minden main campus, engineering campus in Nibong Tebal, Seberang Prai Selatan as well as its health campus in Kelantan.
