PETALING JAYA: Health Minister Dr Adham Baba has announced that two Covid-19 patients have died as the number of cases rises.
The second casualty, Case 178, was a 34-year-old who attended the Sri Petaling Mosque tabligh convention at the end of last month.
The first death, Case 358, was the 60-year-old pastor who died in Sarawak at 11am today.
He had a history of chronic illness and first started displaying symptoms on March 7. He began receiving treatment on March 14 after he tested positive for Covid-19.
The second casualty began experiencing symptoms on March 5, before receiving treatment at Hospital Permai, Johor Bahru, on March 12. His condition deteriorated and he passed away today.
The patient did not have any pre-existing conditions.
Adham also announced that as of today, 120 new cases have been reported, bringing the total to 673. A total of seven patients have recovered and have been discharged.
Of those who tested positive for Covid-19 today, 95 cases are linked to the Sri Petaling Mosque cluster, bringing the total number of patients from that cluster to 428 cases.
About 16,000 people, including 1,500 foreigners, were reported to have attended the tabligh gathering.
Adham also advised the public to abide by the movement control order announced by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin last night, warning that failure to do so, was punishable by a jail sentence of not more than two years and a fine for the first offence.
Subsequently, offenders risk a jail term of up to five years and a fine. After that, the offenders can be fined up to RM200,000 for each day of non-compliance.
Last night, Muhyiddin announced a ban on mass gatherings for religious, sports, social and cultural activities and the closure of schools, government and business premises from Wednesday (March 18) until March 31.
Only essential services and supermarkets, public markets, sundry shops and mini markets will remain open.
“All Malaysians have to be responsible and do their part in assisting the government in stopping the spread of Covid-19,” Muhyiddin said.
