HICCUPS

Technically, hiccups is involuntary spasms of the diaphragm, repeated usually last in 10 to 20 minutes. There is no cause, although hiccups maybe sparked by irritation of the diaphragm as a result of an overfully tummy. In other words, from eating and drinking too much! A sudden change in temperature, perhaps from an icy drinks, can also start you off. If the hiccup persist, there maybe an organic cause. Everyone have different remedies, and depends on how they really work on you, such as:

a)      Holding your breath.

b)      Breathing into a paper bag, not plastic bag. (breath-holding and the bag both work on the basis that increase the amount of carbon dioxide in your blood, and inhibits the hiccup)

c)       Sipping ice water.

d)      Sucking ice.

e)      Sipping vinegar.

f)       Being given a shock.

g)      Pulling your tongue.

h)      Stimulating your uvula.

i)        If it takes prolonged, see doctor and they will give you sedative or analgesic medicine.

GAS

Loud stomach belching, rumbling, but no pain due to bloatedness may produce flatulence – wind or gas popped out via anus. Gas maybe embarassing, but everybody has it. What causes your gas depends on which end it emerges. If you are burping or belching, it’s probably because of air-swallowing – from gulping air as you eat, fizzy liquids, aerated foods, smoking or drinking through a straw. Less commonly, it may be linked to obesity, hiatus hernia, or gallstone.

The gas that come out via anus simply a by-product of digestion, formed by the action of the bacteria in your colon on food residues. Different bacteria produce difference gases; some smells, some don’t. The amount depends on size of your colon and what you have eaten. This can be a problem with a hig-fiber diet, so the best advice on increasing fiber is to do it gradually to give the gut the chance to adjust. Remedies vary according to the cause, and include:

a)      Stop smoking.

b)      Don’t chew gum.

c)       Avoid whippy food, fizzy drinks and drinking with a straw.

d)      Don’t talk when you eat.

e)      Review your diet and avoid notoriously gassy foods.

f)       Charcoal biscuits and herbal remedies such as acidophillus, slippery, mint, and fennel teas work for some people.

Gas and hiccup commonly experienced in everyone, but if they happen in prolonged way, see doctor for medication.
