Health Monitoring System Mobilised Nationwide Due To Haze – Health Minister

PUTRAJAYA, June 19 (Bernama)The Health Ministry has mobilised the health monitoring system nationwide, specifically in areas badly affected by haze to detect increases in related diseases.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Dr S.Subramaniam said diseases related to haze included ‘upper respiratory tract infection’, asthma and conjunctivitis (eye ailment).

Talking at a media conference here today, he said the ministry was also prepared to set up operation rooms in places where the Air Pollution Index (IPU) exceeded 200.

The Department of Environment (DOE), through its website, said seven areas recorded unhealthy IPU readings of between 101 to 200 as of 5pm. It also immediately banned open burning in Selangor, Melaka and Johor.

| TIPS DEALING WITH THE HAZE |

Dr Subramaniam also urged the public to reduce physical activities in the open and to put on face and nose masks if venturing outside the house for a long period, to protect their health.

Meanwhile, in MELAKA, the Melaka state government urged all schools in the state to temporarily cease all activities outside classrooms.

Chief Minister Datuk Idris Haron said the IPU in the city of Melaka and Bukit Rambai were recorded as 161 and 118, respectively.

Idris, who said schools should also encourage students to wear masks, added that an emergency plan was being drawn up in case the IPU continued to rise.
