WHAT IS DIARRHOEA ?

Diarrhoea is not a disease but a symptom of certain diseases. Patients experiencing frequent bowel movements and there is the frequency of watery stools. Diarrhoea usually stops after his symptomatic treatment is given immediately. In adults, this condition is not serious. However, the children and the elderly, dehydration if not treated immediately, it may be fatal.

Diarrhoea symptom

1. Increased frequency of bowel movements.
2. Stools are watery and thin, sometimes preceded by, or has spasms
abdomen.
3. There are winds or extreme wind.
4. Loss of appetite.
5. Sometimes a fever.
6. Sometimes a feeling of nausea and vomiting.
7. Muscle pain.

Causes diarrhea

1 Drinking contaminated water
2 Eating contaminated food.
3 food intolerance, eg lactose intolerant.
4 virus infections, bacteria or parasites in the intestines, such as rotavirus, Shigella, and ameba.

The causes of chronic Diarrhoea

If the diarrhea lasts more than 3-5 days, it may be due to chronic causes such as:
1. Gastrogenus disease or stomach – for example, anemia, cancer.
2. After the surgery – for example, gastrectomy.
3. Bowel diseases.
4. Chronic intestinal infections – bacterial infections such as Salmonella, Shigella – the infection-
5. Viral infections – protozoan infections
6. Intestinal infestation, for example by pinworm
7. Defect absorption
8. After surgery
9. Internal Fistula
10.The lack of substance, for example Pelagra
11. Ulcer disease is common, such as ulcerative colitis.

13. Cancer
14. Toxic medications that contain mercury or arsenic.
15. Pancreatic diseases such as tumors, chronic pancreatitis.
16. Organic neurological diseases -e.g. intracranial disease.

What can be done by you

Diarrhoea is usually easy for a short time for 3 days and may stop by itself, if the dehydration experienced by the treated immediately.

1. Drink plenty of water.
2. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and milk.
3. Take oral rehydration fluids (please consult with your pharmacist)
4. Take a soft food such as porridge, biscuits, crackers or toast, or apple or cooked bananas.
5. Avoid fatty foods, meat and raw vegetables, which are more difficult to digest.
6. If the diarrhea does not stop within 2-3 days or if the situation becomes more acute, negotiable with your doctor.
7. Take the medicine for diarrhea after beunding with your doctor or pharmacist.
