Tips for Protecting Your Eyes During the Summer

As we head into those warm summer months, we’ll be spending more and more time outdoors basking in the sun. Sure, we all know the importance of wearing sunscreen to protect our skin; however, protecting our eyes is just as important.


Wear Those Sunglasses

 One of the best things you can do to protect your eyes during the summer, even all year long, is to wear sunglasses that provide UV protection.Hence, it is always better to buy some good sunglasses. The sun emits three types of ultraviolet radiation: UV-A, UV-B and UV-C. You want to protect against UV-A and UV-B, because the Earth’s ozone layer actually absorbs UV-C radiation. You want to find sunglasses that offer 100% UV protection that will effectively block out potentially harmful UV radiation.

 You should also choose glasses that are free of distortion and imperfections and that screen out 50 to 90 percent of visible light. Those fashion lenses generally do not provide this protection. Also, the best sunglasses come in gray, brown, or green lenses.

Wear a Hat

 Add a hat to those sunglasses for even more protection from the sun. Hats will also provide extra protection for your face’s sensitive skin. Another thing to keep in mind is that UV radiation will still penetrate clouds, so don’t think that just because it’s cloudy you don’t need protection. Also, the sun’s rays are the strongest mid-day to early afternoon.

Eye Protection for Sports

 During the summer, many people play more outdoor sports. Make sure that you protect your eyes from possible sports injuries by wearing appropriate eye protection for your sport. You don’t want to ruin a perfectly good summer by having a ball hit you in the eye!

Avoid Harsh Chemicals and Irritants

 We love to spend summertime in the pool. It’s the perfect way to cool off while still enjoying the sun. Make sure that you don’t expose your eyes to too much of those pool chemicals, such as chlorine. You may want to consider wearing swimming goggles if you plan on spending extended time in your pool.

 If you like hiking and camping, make sure to avoid things like poison ivy, oak, and sumac. You should also try to avoid insect bites. This will definitely make your camping trip much more enjoyable.

 If you follow these few simple steps and tips, you can make sure that your eyes are protected from potential harm and damage, so you can truly enjoy the summer!
