Rotavirus cases on the rise believed originated from Bukit Merah Laketown Resort

IPOH: The number of suspected rotavirus cases, believed to have originated from the Bukit Merah Laketown Resort near Taiping, continues to rise.

As of Thursday, 30 cases were reported in three states, said state health deputy director (public health) Dr B. Venugopalan.

In Perak, there are 16 cases, 11 in Kedah and three in Penang.

The youngest victim is only eight months old while the oldest is 53. The majority of them, 26 cases, involve children below age 10. “All are in stable condition,” he said.

He said all water facilities at the resort remain closed. “The cleaning process began on Friday and will take a few days to complete.”

On Thursday, state health director Datuk Dr Juita Ghazalie said officers from the Kerian district health office, together with National Public Health Laboratory personnel, took samples from the pools at the resort to test for rotavirus.

According to her, food samples were taken from the eateries in the resort while checks were made on the washrooms and sewage system.

Rotavirus is the most common cause of diarrhoea, especially among infants and young children which can be fatal.
