Tar, nicotine content in cigarettes to be reduced: Subramaniam

As we know, smoking is bad in health. Malaysian government has made many campaign to reduce citizen to avoid smoking. The latest news is Malaysian health ministry has make decision to ask cigarette companies to reduce tar and nicotine content in cigarettes. Minister of Health Ministry, Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam in the press statement told reporters “”We want tar content in a stick (of cigarette) to be reduced from 20 milligrams to 10 milligrams and nicotine from 1.5 milligrams to one milligram,” after opening the national level ‘No Tabocco Day’ at Sunway Pyramid.

The other steps is to include bigger anti smoking pictures on cigarette packs from 40 percent size to 50 percent. Health Minister also block direct and indirect promotion of cigarettes besides prohibiting offering of discounts for tobacco products. S. Subramniam also said that Malaysia might also follow in the footsteps of Thailand to stop supporting community or sport activities promotion. It also a law to stop sale of cigarettes from racks displayed prominently but instead from drawers on demand from customers.

“In Malaysia, between 10 and 12 per cents or about 10,000 deaths of the total number of Malaysians dying annually is smoking related.”

In 2011, 11,056 deaths recorded in government hospitals were attributed to smoking. He added that it was estimated that there were about four million smokers in the country.

Malaysians, particularly from the middle class, he said, spent between RM500 and RM600 a month on cigarettes which had huge implications on their economic wellbeing.
