Many women have irregular periods. There can be many causes for that, but one of the causes can be Polycystic Ovary Syndrome or PCOS. PCOS is linked to changes in hormone levels including a rise in male hormones which can lead to issues like irregular periods, unusual hair growth or loss, and other symptoms. This syndrome may also contribute to infertility.

What is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome ?

In a healthy woman one egg is released during ovulation. However in suffers of PCOS, a cyst is formed around the egg in the ovaries instead of being released.

What are the symptoms?

  • Changes in the menstrual cycle (very light or very heavy)
  • Irregular periods
  • Bad acne
  • Darkened or thickened skin
  • Weight gain
  • Infertility

An excess of male hormones causes:

  • Hair growth on the chest and face
  • Smaller breast size
  • Thinning of hair on head
  • Deeper voice

What are the treatments?

A doctor can diagnose PCOS by checking for swollen ovaries. Suffers of PCOS also have an increased risk of diabetes, infertility, breast cancer, endometrial cancer, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity.

Treatments include hormone therapy, weight loss, and hair removal.

With treatment women who suffer from PCOS are usually able to have a child.
