Say No to Obesity

According to the facts from World Health Organization, about 65% of the world’s population live in countries where overweight and obesity kills more people than underweight. More than 40 million children under age of five were overweight in 2010. Seems like there is no tiny reason to overcome this problem nowadays.

There is always many ways to reduce the risks for the obese or overweight people from diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholestrol level, joint disease and so on by having extremely change in active lifestyle and well-balancing diet before too late.

Let us start from food management. We get calories from carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism. It is used to produce energy by our body. Energy is needed for basic function of the body and physical activities such as walking, running, breathing, metabolism, and synthesized new cells. Those activites will burn out the calories which obtained from foods.

To lessen or maintain our body weight, we have to use the excess calories and reduce calories intake due to our body needs. For example, a woman with 64 kg and 160 cm, thus the Body Mass Index (BMI) is 25 (overweight). Therefore, estimation for energy requirement is 1600 kcal/day which means that she have to obtain calories in about 1600 kcal/day.

The overweight and obesity people should be encouraged and be motivated to reduce their weight, thus, it is important to plan their serving size and diet menu based on low Glycemic Index (GI) foods. We have to know that low GI foods are slowly digested and be absorbed by body, as well as slowly increase the glucose and insulin level which is much better for body health rather than high GI foods.

It is suggested to have vegetables, beans, sweet fruits, and small seeds in diet, while white bread, most white rice, glucose, maltose, potatoes and extruded breakfast cereals categorized in high GI foods.
